It supersedes the older number 1838968, so a part carrying that number is the same part.
It fits the E36 convertible, touring and compact (318i, 318ti, 323i, 325i, 328i and M3, 1994–1999), with the M42, M43, M44, M50, M52 or S50 and other engines — and the European-market versions. It also fits the E46 sedan, coupe and touring (320i, 2001–2005), with the M52 or M54 engines — and the European-market versions.
BMW draws it on 54 diagrams, among them Retrofit, 3rd head restraint, rear (03_2585) and Rear seat head restraint (52_0616).
