Genuine BMW part 12 31 1 717 385: Generator (exchange unit). The number stamped on the part is 12311717385; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1717385. BMW's catalog calls it “EXCH generator”. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Alternator with motor and mounting. It supersedes the older number 1714222, so a part carrying that number is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 1735704.

BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.

BMW draws it on 2 diagrams, among them Alternator, individual parts 115A (12_0453) and Alternator, individual parts 115A (12_0524). It weighs about 7.0 kg (15 lb).

We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
