This is a genuine BMW needle cage, part number 23 21 1 282 572. The number stamped on the part is 23211282572; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1282572. You will find it on our Transmission shelf, under Transmission shafts. It supersedes the older number 1228409, so a part carrying that number is the same part.

It fits every E36 body style (318i, 318ti, 320i, 323i and 325i, 1992–1999), with the M40, M42, M43, M44, M50 or M52 engines — and the European-market versions. It also fits the E46 sedan and coupe (316i, 1999–2004), with the M43, N40, N42 or N45 engines.

BMW draws it on 9 diagrams, among them S5D...G countershaft/reverse gear (23_0224) and S5D...G drive shaft/output shaft (23_0225). It weighs about 30 g (under 0.1 lb).
