Needle cage — a genuine BMW part, number 23 22 1 224 811. The number stamped on the part is 23221224811; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1224811. You will find it on our Transmission shelf, under Gear wheels.

It fits the E36 sedan, coupe, convertible and touring (325i, 328i and M3, 1992–1999), with the M50, M52, S50 or S52 engines — and the European-market versions. It also fits every E46 body style (325i, 328i and 330i, 1999–2006), with the M52 or M54 engines — and the European-market versions.

BMW draws it on 6 diagrams, among them S5D...Z countershaft/reverse gear (23_0127) and GS5S31BZ(SMG) Counter shaft/reverse gear (23_0939). BMW's catalog calls for two of these at each place it is fitted. It weighs about 20 g (under 0.1 lb).

We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
