Genuine BMW part 12 31 8 558 421: Satz Generator. The number stamped on the part is 12318558421; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 8558421. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Alternator with motor and mounting. It supersedes the older numbers 7729666 and 8534666, so a part carrying any of them is the same part.
BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.
BMW draws it on 2 diagrams, among them Alternator (12_1698) and Alternator (12_2071).
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
