This is a genuine BMW set case holder, part number 77 42 8 535 862. The number stamped on the part is 77428535862; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 8535862. It supersedes the older number 8527909, so a part carrying that number is the same part.
BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.
BMW draws it on 2 diagrams, among them Set, case holder, Vario case (46_1800) and Set, case holder, Vario case (77_0181). It weighs about 3.2 kg (7.0 lb).
