The number stamped on the part is 12411735400; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1735400. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Starter motor with mounting. It supersedes the older numbers 1466342 and 1714750, so a part carrying any of them is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 1740374.
It fits every E36 body style (318i, 318ti, 320i, 323i, 325i, 328i and M3, 1992–1999), with the M40, M42, M43, M50, M52 or S50 and other engines — and the European-market versions.
BMW draws it on 3 diagrams, among them Starter Parts 1,4kw (12_0509) and Starter Parts 1,4kw (12_0516). BMW lists the quantity used as “as required”. It weighs about 3.6 kg (7.9 lb).
