Genuine BMW part 23 21 1 282 553: Synchronizer set. The number stamped on the part is 23211282553; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1282553. You will find it on our Transmission shelf, under Transmission shafts. It supersedes the older numbers 1224952 and 7553518, so a part carrying any of them is the same part.

It fits the E36 sedan, coupe, convertible and touring (325i, 328i and M3, 1992–1999), with the M50, M52, S50 or S52 engines — and the European-market versions. It also fits every E46 body style (325i, 328i and 330i, 1999–2006), with the M52 or M54 engines — and the European-market versions.

BMW draws it on 7 diagrams, among them S5D...Z drive shaft/output shaft (23_0126) and S5D...Z drive shaft/output shaft 4-wheel (23_0892). BMW's catalog calls for two of these at each place it is fitted. It weighs about 160 g (0.4 lb).
