This is a genuine BMW vent hose, part number 17 12 1 712 736. The number stamped on the part is 17121712736; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1712736. You will find it on our Cooling System shelf, under Coolant lines. It supersedes the older number 2160746, so a part carrying that number is the same part.

It fits every E36 body style (M3, 1995–1999), with the S50 engine — and the European-market versions.

BMW draws it on 72 diagrams, among them Radiator/Expansion Tank/Frame (17_0090) and Radiator/Expansion Tank/Frame (17_0962). BMW lists the quantity used as “as required”. It weighs about 120 g (0.3 lb).
