This is a genuine BMW alternator, part number 12 31 1 277 229. The number stamped on the part is 12311277229; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1277229. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Alternator with motor and mounting. It supersedes the older numbers 1266660 and 1270901, so a part carrying any of them is the same part.

BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.

BMW draws it on 9 diagrams, among them Alternator (12_0124) and Generator, individual parts (12_0152). It weighs about 4.7 kg (10 lb).

We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
