This is a genuine BMW ignition key (code), part number 51 25 8 540 950. The number stamped on the part is 51258540950; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 8540950. You will find it on our Interior Body shelf, under Locks. It supersedes the older number 8543578, so a part carrying that number is the same part.
BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.
BMW draws it on 2 diagrams, among them Ignition steering lock as per VIN (51_1966) and Single key locking system EWS4 (51_9661). It weighs about 20 g (under 0.1 lb). It also comes in BMW kits Set, keys, with ring aerial, encoded (8540949) and Set of Keys with EWS Control Unit (8557525).
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
