This is a genuine BMW sprocket, part number 11 21 7 588 996. The number stamped on the part is 11217588996; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 7588996. You will find it on our Engine shelf, under Crankshaft with bearing. It supersedes the older number 7534654, so a part carrying that number is the same part.
BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.
BMW draws it on 12 diagrams, among them Belt Drive-Vibration Damper (11_3916) and Timing and valve train-timing chain (11_3924). It weighs about 90 g (0.2 lb). It also comes in BMW kit Set, chain drive (8623601).
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
