This is a genuine BMW basic control unit DME (exchange unit), part number 12 14 1 743 258. The number stamped on the part is 12141743258; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1743258. BMW's catalog calls it “EXCH Basic control unit DME”. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Other Engine Electrical System parts. It supersedes the older number 1743251, so a part carrying that number is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 1427691.

It fits the E36 sedan, coupe and compact (318i and 318ti, 1992–1999), with the M42 engine.

BMW draws it on the Uncoded DME control unit (12_1979) diagram. It weighs about 553 g (1.2 lb).
