This is a genuine BMW housing cover, part number 23 11 1 228 170. The number stamped on the part is 23111228170; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1228170. You will find it on our Transmission shelf, under Housing with cover. It supersedes the older numbers 1224296, 1224299 and 1228110, so a part carrying any of them is the same part.

BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.

BMW draws it on 12 diagrams, among them Getrag 260/5/50 (sport) Housing+parts (23_0133) and Getrag 280 Housing+attaching Parts (23_0214). It weighs about 392 g (0.9 lb).

We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
