The number stamped on the part is 12311727576; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1727576. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Alternator with motor and mounting. It supersedes the older number 1721921, so a part carrying that number is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 1739421.
It fits the E36 sedan and coupe (318i, 1992–1999), with the M40 or M42 engines — and the European-market versions.
BMW draws it on 2 diagrams, among them Alternator, individual parts 80A (12_0490) and Alternator (12_1499). BMW lists the quantity used as “as required”. It weighs about 5.9 kg (13 lb).
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
