The number stamped on the part is 12411735524; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1735524. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Starter motor with mounting. It supersedes the older number 1715238, so a part carrying that number is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 1740379.
It fits every E36 body style (318i, 318ti, 320i, 323i, 325i, 328i and M3, 1992–1999), with the M40, M42, M43, M50, M52 or S50 and other engines — and the European-market versions.
BMW draws it on 4 diagrams, among them Starter Parts 1,4kw (12_0509) and Starter Parts 1,4kw (12_0516). BMW lists the quantity used as “as required”. It weighs about 3.6 kg (7.9 lb).
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
