01 View BMW DiagramSee this part on the official exploded view→Compact generator (exchange unit) — a genuine BMW part, number 12 31 1 247 311. The number stamped on the part is 12311247311; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1247311. BMW's catalog calls it “EXCH compact generator”. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Alternator with motor and mounting. It supersedes the older number 1247287, so a part carrying that number is the same part.
It fits every E36 body style (318i and 318ti, 1992–1999), with the M42, M43 or M44 engines — and the European-market versions.
BMW draws it on 3 diagrams, among them Alternator (12_1972) and Alternatormounting Parts (12_1982). It weighs about 5.7 kg (13 lb).
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
